Jerzy Jan Maksymiuk is a Polish composer, pianist, and conductor born on April 9, 1936, in Grodno. Maksymiuk studied at the Warsaw Conservatory under Piotr Perkowski, Jerzy Lefeld, and Bogusław Madey. In 1964, Maksymiuk won first prize in the Paderewski Piano Competition. He conducted at the Warsaw Grand Theatre from 1970 to 1972. In 1972, he formed the Polish Chamber Orchestra, which later changed its name to Sinfonia Varsovia. Maksymiuk received an award from the Polish prime minister in 1973. He served as principal conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra between 1976 and 1977. From 1983 to 1993, Maksymiuk was chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He received an honorary degree from Strathclyde University in 1990. In 1993, he became principal conductor of the Krakow Philharmonic. Maksymiuk received the Elgar Medal in 1999. His discography includes the Ignacy Jan Paderewski work “Symphony in B minor 'Polonia'”.
