Howard Arman, born in 1954 in London, is an English choral conductor and opera director. He studied at the Trinity College of Music in London before moving to Austria and Germany in 1981. Early in his career, he worked with leading British ensembles and conducted radio choirs such as the Norddeutscher Rundfunk and the RIAS Kammerchor. From 1983 to 2000, Arman led the Salzburger Bach-Chor. From 1998 until 2013, he has been the director and artistic leader of the MDR Rundfunkchor. He won the Handel Prize of the Handel Festival in Halle in 1996 for his work shaping the festival's orchestra and conducting operas by George Frideric Handel. Arman has also served as general music director of Theater and Philharmonie Thüringen, musical director of the Luzerner Theater, and Director of the Bayerische Rundfunk Chor since 2017. Notable recordings include Handel: Occasional Oratorio (2017) and Bach: Motetten (2018).
