Sueli Costa was a Brazilian singer-songwriter and composer who was born as Sueli Correa Costa in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1943. She achieved early professional recognition in 1967 after composing the hit song “Por exemplo você” for the singer Nara Leão and is famous for her contributions to the Música Popular Brasileira movement and for her extensive collaborations with lyricists including Abel Silva and Cacaso. Costa was raised in a musical family and taught herself to play guitar at age 15 before writing her first composition, “Balãozinho”, at age 18. Her discography includes her eponymous debut studio recording Sueli Costa (1975), which featured the tracks “Dentro de mim mora um anjo” and “Coração ateu”, and the recordings Vida de artista (1978) and Louça fina (1980). Throughout her career, her compositions were recorded by major artists such as Elis Regina, Maria Bethânia, and Ivan Lins. Her final work was the live recording Sueli Costa Convida (2018), which celebrated her 50-year career. Costa died in Rio de Janeiro in 2023.
