Giaches de Wert, born in 1535 in Weert, was a Franco-Flemish composer and one of the leading figures in the development of the madrigal in the late Renaissance. At a young age, he moved to Italy as a choirboy in the chapel of Maria di Carona in Naples. By 1543, he was already serving under Giulio Cesare Gonzaga in Rome. De Wert's career took off when he began working with Cipriano de Rore and later became Kapellmeister at the Basilica Santa Barbara in Mantua from 1565 until his death. De Wert's influence extended to notable figures like Claudio Monteverdi, who worked under him as a violinist and singer. Throughout his career, he received high honors, including the citizenship of Mantua and significant financial rewards from various European courts. He died on May 6, 1596, in Mantua.
