Complex was a Japanese rock duo formed in 1988 by guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei and singer Koji Kikkawa. They debuted with their self-titled album Complex in 1989, featuring the hit single "Be My Baby." Their music quickly gained popularity, and the group quickly established themselves for their energetic live shows. In 1990, they released their second album, Romantic 1990, which continued their momentum. The song "1990" was released as a single and garnered a good amount of popularity. This release was followed by a live album, 19901108, capturing one of the group's concert performances. However, this concert turned out to be their last, as the duo disbanded shortly afterward. Tomoyasu Hotei later described the breakup as a "mistake," likening it to a divorce. After the breakup, both Tomoyasu Hotei and Koji Kikkawa had successful solo careers. In 1998, the group's label Toshiba EMI released a greatest hits compilation COMPLEX BEST (1998), along with a DVD reissue of their video catalog. The group has had some notable reunions; in 2011 the group performed at the Tokyo Dome. The proceeds from these concerts were donated to aid the victims of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. This reunion performance was later released on CD and DVD in 2012.
