One of Japan's biggest rock acts during the 1980s, Boøwy was formed in 1981 in Takasaki, Gunma. Originally known as Bōi, the group changed its name to Boøwy in January 1982, two months before releasing the debut album Moral. Boøwy's sound became increasingly pop-influenced at the 1980s progressed, with 1985's self-titled Boøwy serving as the band's commercial breakthrough. Two albums followed in 1986, with Just a Hero climbing to Number 5 on the Oricon Albums Chart and Beat Emotion peaking at Number 1. Psychopath also topped the charts in 1987, along with the lead single "Marionette." Tensions between the band's co-founders, Kyosuke Himuro and Tomoyasu Hotei, lead to the band's breakup in 1988, with Himuro and Hotei both enjoying highly successful solo careers during the decades that followed.
