Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin was born on 10 December 1950 in Clonmel, Ireland, and established himself as a pianist and composer. After studying under Sean Ó Riada at University College Cork, he entered the recording scene with early releases such as Cry of the Mountain (1982) and The Dolphin’s Way (1987) on Virgin Records. His first major breakthrough came with the 1989 EP Oilean / Island, which showcased his blend of Celtic and world music textures. In the 1990s he continued to expand his catalogue, issuing Casadh/Turning (1991), Gaiseadh/Flowing (1992), and Between Worlds (1995), while collaborating with Nóirín Ní Riain and the Benedictine Monks of Glenstal Abbey. The 2000s saw further releases including Becoming (1998), Templum (2001), and Elver Gleams (2010), the latter achieving critical acclaim and a subsequent broadcast by RTE lyric fm. Ó Súilleabháin also founded the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in 1994, earning honorary degrees from University College Cork (2004) and the Royal Scottish Conservatoire (2017), and receiving the Freedom of Clonmel (2016). He passed away on 7 November 2018 after a prolonged illness, leaving a legacy of innovative compositions and educational leadership in Irish music.
