Dinu Lipatti, born Constantin Lipatti in 1917 in Bucharest, Kingdom of Romania, was a classical pianist and composer. He studied piano and composition at Gheorghe Lazăr High School under Mihail Jora. In 1930, he performed Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor at the Bucharest Opera to great acclaim. Lipatti finished second in the 1933 Vienna International Piano Competition. His career was interrupted by World War II; he fled Romania in 1943 and settled in Geneva, Switzerland, where he taught at the Geneva Conservatory. Despite declining health due to Hodgkin's disease, Lipatti recorded several albums between 1947 and 1950 with Columbia Graphophone/EMI. His final recital was recorded in 1950. Lipatti died in Geneva in 1950, at the age of 33.
