A major figure in French cinema, Nathalie Baye has appeared in over fifty films and received four César awards over the course of a half-century career. Born in Mainneville (Eure), she began her artistic career as an actress after graduating from the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique. She made a name for herself in the 1970s through her work with major directors such as François Truffaut(La nuit américaine, 1973) and Jean-Luc Godard(Sauve qui peut (la vie), 1980). For decades, she has built a reputation for her nuanced, natural interpretations in both auteur and mainstream cinema. She won four Césars, in 1981 for Sauve qui peut (la vie), 1982 for Une étrange affaire, 1983 for La Balance and 2006 for Le Petit Lieutenant. In addition to other awards, Nathalie Baye has made a number of forays into the musical world, notably with the troupe Les Enfoirés, of which she was a member in 1986, 1996 and 2007. In 1985, when she was Johnny Hallyday's girlfriend, she recited the introductory lyrics to the song "Quelque chose de Tennessee". She then lent her voice to the audio book La Marquise after George Sand (1986) and to the album La Petite Sirène (1990). In 2022, The Penelopes invited her to sing on the track "Life Is Long". Chevalier, then Officer of the Légion d'honneur, Nathalie Baye died in Paris on April 17, 2026, aged 77.
