A self-taught guitarist, Oscar Moore joined one of the first and most popular trios in jazz history in the late '30s, led by Nat King Cole with bassist Wesley Prince. After a decade of collaboration with the pianist, he left the trio in the late '40s to settle in Los Angeles. He performed mainly with his brother John, but his fame in the '40s brought him into contact with other great leaders such as Coleman Hawkins, Art Tatum and Lionel Hampton. As Nat King Cole's trio (piano, guitar, double bass) was the first of its kind, Oscar Moore served as a model for several years for guitarists who subsequently settled into this kind of instrumental structure, where the guitar no longer played a purely accompaniment role.
