André Villéger, born André on August 12, 1945, in Rosny-sous-Bois, France, is a clarinetist and saxophonist known for his contributions to jazz music. He began playing the saxophone alto at an early age before transitioning to the clarinet in 1964. Villéger's initial experiences included performing with a New Orleans-style orchestra in local cafés and cultural centers. In the 1970s, he played with various ensembles such as Lutéciens and Cocoro Steel Band, and collaborated with notable figures like Claude Bolling. A significant breakthrough came in 1975 when Villéger began performing regularly at the jazz club of the Méridien Hotel, where he interacted with prominent American jazz musicians including Milt Buckner and Wild Bill Davis. This period also saw him receive the Sidney Bechet Prize from the Académie du Jazz. He participated in notable projects like Mingus Epitaph and the Caratini Jazz Ensemble, and released several albums including "Strictly Strayhorn" (2017).
