Walter Boeykens, born on January 6, 1938, in Bornem, Belgium, was a notable clarinetist and conductor. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music Brussels and won the International Competition for Contemporary Music of Utrecht in 1965. Boeykens served as principal clarinetist of the Belgian Radio and Television (BRT) Philharmonic Orchestra from 1964 to 1984, premiering Pierre Boulez's Domaines with the orchestra under Boulez’s direction in 1968. This performance led to invitations to major European music festivals and worldwide concerts. Boeykens left the BRT Philharmonic in 1984 to focus on his solo career, performing under conductors such as Charles Münch and Leonard Bernstein. He also held a teaching position at the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory of Antwerp. Boeykens was awarded several honors, including the Grand Prix du disque in 1975 and was knighted by King Albert II of Belgium in 1997. He passed away on April 23, 2013.
