Gerard Schurmann, born on January 19, 1924, in Kertosono, East Java, was a Dutch-born British composer and conductor. He moved to England as a teenager to study music composition under Alan Rawsthorne. He began his career as a concert pianist and later served as a culture attaché at the Dutch embassy in London. In the late 1940s, he started composing for film, initially for Dutch cinema before transitioning to British films by the mid-1950s. Notable works include scores for The Long Arm (1956), The Camp on Blood Island (1958), and Horrors of the Black Museum (1959). Throughout the 1960s, he composed music for films such as Konga (1961) and The Ceremony (1963). His concert works include Concerto for Orchestra. He lived in the USA from 1981 until his death on March 24, 2020.
