Gabriel Chmura, born May 7, 1946, in Wroclaw, Poland, was a conductor. He began piano lessons under Adam Kopyciński and emigrated to Israel in 1957. Gabriel Chmura studied at the Tel Aviv Music Academy from 1964 to 1968, followed by further studies in Paris and Vienna. His breakthrough came in 1971, when he won at the Herbert von Karajan Foundation's conducting competition in Berlin and the Guido Cantelli Competition at La Scala in Milan. Gabriel Chmura's career took off with his appointment as Generalmusikdirektor at the Stadttheater Aachen in 1974, making him the youngest orchestra leader in Germany. He later led orchestras in Bochum, Ottawa, and Katowice, including a tenure as music director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio from 2001 to 2007. Gabriel Chmura passed away on November 17, 2020, in Brussels.
