Chubby Jackson, born Greig Steward Jackson on October 25, 1918, in New York City, was an American jazz double bass player. Raised by musician parents in Vaudeville and Broadway, Jackson began his career at sixteen as a clarinetist before switching to the double bass. He performed with big bands led by Raymond Scott, Jan Savitt, and Henry Busse starting in 1939. Jackson's breakthrough came with Charlie Barnet’s band from 1941 to 1943, followed by Woody Herman’s first band. He contributed compositions like "Northwest Passage" to Herman’s repertoire. After touring Europe with his own bebop group in 1947, Jackson led his own big band from 1948 to 1949 and released albums including Chubby Takes Over (1958) and Lucky 7 (1981). He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 2000. Jackson passed away on October 1, 2003, in Rancho Bernardo, California.
