John Edmond, born on November 18, 1936 in Luanshya, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), was a Rhodesian folk singer and retired soldier. He displayed musical talent at an early age, playing the mouth organ at three years old and later the bugle in his Boy Scout band. Edmond's music career began with the formation of the Bushcats Skiffle Group in 1958 while serving in the Royal Rhodesia Regiment. The group gained popularity among their peers, leading to cabaret and rock 'n' roll performances. Edmond achieved fame during the Rhodesian Bush War with his album Troopiesongs. He was known for composing patriotic hits such as "The UDI Song". Post-war, Edmond continued recording albums like Zimsongs (2011) and Of Aeroplanes & African Plains (2014).
