The BBC Big Band, also known as the BBC Radio Big Band, was formed in 1964 under the British Broadcasting Corporation. The band originated from the merger of the BBC Variety Orchestra and the BBC Revue Orchestra, becoming part of the BBC Radio Orchestra. Initially led by Malcolm Lockyer, the band consisted of four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, and a rhythm section. In 1979, the band gained its own identity through Big Band Special on BBC Radio 2. Notable collaborations include performances with Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, and Michael Bublé. The band has also been recognized as the Best Big Band at the British Jazz Awards multiple times.
