Malo Ioane Luafutu, known professionally as Scribe, was born on May 29, 1979 in Christchurch, New Zealand. He is a rapper and singer of Samoan descent. Scribe's breakthrough came with the release of his debut single "Stand Up" in 2003, which reached Number 1 on the New Zealand Top 40 singles chart and spent twelve weeks at the top. His debut album The Crusader, released later that year under Dirty Records, was certified four times platinum in New Zealand, selling 60,000 copies. Scribe followed up with notable collaborations, including P-Money's "Stop the Music" (2004) and J.Williams' "You Got Me" (2010), both of which reached Number 1 on the singles chart. Scribe's second studio album Rhyme Book was released in 2007 but did not achieve the same commercial success as its predecessor. The album featured collaborations with notable artists such as Talib Kweli and included singles like "My Shit" and "F.R.E.S.H.". In response to the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, Scribe released a remix of his single "Not Many", titled "Not Many Cities", which received positive media attention but also sparked controversy. After a decade-long hiatus, Scribe announced the release of his third studio album Scribe is Dead, with the single "Non Attachment" released in 2023 and "Glowstick" at the end of that year. He also premiered another song, "Do or Die, Don’t or Die", in April 2024, stating that this would be his final album. Scribe Is Dead was finally released on September 5, 2025, via Scribe World Music Group.
