Schwabinggrad Ballett was founded in 2000 during the NoBorder-Camp as an agitprop collective from Hamburg, Germany. Initially focused on subversive political actions at demonstrations and economic summits, the group evolved to include artistic formats such as music and performance projects. Their first album, Schwabinggrad Ballett, was released in 2005 by Staubgold Records. The collective also participated in various political events, including anti-Olympia activities and border camps. Notable members have included Ted Gaier, Charalambos Ganotis, Sylvi Kretzschmar, Peter Ott, Heike Nöth, Christine Schulz, Margarita Tsomou, Liz Rech, and Christoph Twickel. Schwabinggrad Ballett collaborated with the group Lampedusa in Hamburg, leading to performances such as We are evidence of war in 2014 and Chöre der Angekommenen in 2017. The name Schwabinggrad Ballett combines references to the Munich district of Schwabing and Stalingrad.
