Ayşe Leyla Gencer, known professionally as Leyla Gencer, and born on October 10, 1928 in Polonezköy, Istanbul, was an opera singer. She began her musical education at the Istanbul Conservatory before switching to private studies with Giannina Arangi-Lombardi and later Apollo Granforte. In 1950, she made her operatic debut as Santuazza in Cavalleria Rusticana in Ankara. Gencer's international career took off in 1953 when she debuted at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. She went on to perform regularly at La Scala in Milan from 1957, appearing in roles such as Leonora in La forza del destino, and Elisabetta in Don Carlos. Her repertoire encompassed over 70 roles. Gencer's last operatic appearance was in 1985 at La Fenice. She continued to teach young opera singers until her death on May 10, 2008, in Milan.
