Balsam Range, an American bluegrass music group, was founded in 2007 in Haywood County, North Carolina. The band initially consisted of Tim Surrett on upright bass and resonator guitar, Caleb Smith on guitar, Marc Pruett on banjo, Buddy Melton on fiddle, and Darren Nicholson on mandolin. Their debut album, Marching Home, was released in October 2007. The band's breakthrough came with the release of their third album, Trains I Missed (2010), which earned them their first International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) award for Song of the Year in 2011. Subsequent albums included Papertown (2012), which won Album of the Year at the IBMA awards in 2013, and Five (2014). Balsam Range's collaboration with John Driskell Hopkins resulted in the album Daylight (2013) and a live album. Their 2016 album, Mountain Voodoo, won Album of the Year at the IBMA awards in 2017.
