Gina Bachauer, born in 1913 in Athens, Greece, was a Greek classical pianist. She graduated from the Athens Conservatory in 1929 and studied under Alfred Cortot and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Her debut performance with an orchestra occurred in 1932. In 1950, she made her U.S. debut, receiving positive reviews despite a low turnout. Bachauer toured extensively, giving over 100 concerts each year across the United States and Europe. She recorded extensively with labels such as His Master's Voice, RCA Victor, and Mercury. Bachauer died in 1976 of a heart attack at the Athens Festival, on the day she was to appear as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C. The Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation was established in her honor to support young pianists through educational outreach and prestigious competitions.
