John Parry, born February 18, 1776 in Denbigh, Wales, was a harpist and composer. He taught himself to play the fife and clarinet before joining the Denbighshire militia's volunteers' band in 1793, becoming its conductor by 1797. In 1807, Parry moved to London, where he performed on two flageolets at a concert at Covent Garden. Parry was appointed musical director at Vauxhall Gardens in 1809. Given the bardic name Bardd Alaw in 1821, his works include over three hundred songs, duets, and other pieces for instruments like the harp, piano, flageolet, violin, and flute. Notable vocal works include "Jenny Jones" and "Oh, Let the Kind Minstrel." Parry died on April 8, 1851.
