Joseph Fuchs, born on April 26, 1899, in New York City, was an American violinist and teacher. He studied with Franz Kneisel and graduated from the Institute of Musical Art in New York in 1918. Fuchs began his career as a concertmaster for the Cleveland Orchestra in 1926 but left in 1940 to pursue a solo career. His breakthrough came with successful debuts in New York in 1943, leading him to co-found the Musicians' Guild. Fuchs performed extensively across Europe, South America, the USSR, Israel, and Japan, collaborating with major U.S. orchestras. He premiered works by Walter Piston, Lopatnikoff, Ben Weber, and Mario Peragallo. Fuchs taught violin at the Juilliard School from 1946 and received the American String Teachers’ Association's Artist-Teacher Award in 1971. He played the Stradivarius Cadix, a 1722 violin. He passed away on March 14, 1997, in New York City.
