Piero Bellugi, born on July 14, 1924, in Florence, Italy, was an Italian musician and conductor. He studied under Luigi Dallapiccola, Igor Markevitch, and Leonard Bernstein. Bellugi gained international recognition directing orchestras at festivals such as Ottawa, Paris, and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. In 1967, he became the musical director of the Rai Symphony Orchestra in Turin and later led the Opera di Palermo in 1987. He also held positions with orchestras in Parma, Lisbon, Oakland, and Portland. Bellugi premiered works by contemporary composers like Luciano Berio and Olivier Messiaen. He taught conducting at conservatories in Florence, Turin, Rome, Siena, and Boston. Bellugi passed away on June 10, 2012.
