Thomas Sanderling, born Thomas on October 2, 1942, in Nowosibirsk, Russian Federation, is a German conductor. He studied violin at the Special Music School of the Leningrad Conservatory and later at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. Sanderling made his conducting debut in 1962 and worked with notable figures such as Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein. His early career included positions in Sondershausen, Reichenbach, and Halle (Saale), where he was appointed General Music Director in 1966. Throughout his career, Sanderling has conducted at prestigious venues including the Vienna State Opera and the Berlin State Opera. He has won the Grand Prix of Osaka critics' prize twice and was given the title of lifetime music director laureate.
