Leopold Mordkhelovich Godowsky Sr. was born on 13 February 1870 in Žasliai (Vilna Governorate, Russian Empire) and became an American citizen in 1891. He began playing piano at a young age and gave his first concert at nine years old. In 1884, Godowsky made his debut in the United States with a concert appearance in Boston. He performed across North America and Europe. Notable compositions included Java Suite (1925), Triakontameron (1920), and the 53 Studies on Chopin’s Études (1894–1914). Godowsky taught at the New York College of Music in 1890 and later at the Vienna Academy of Music from 1909 to 1914. He suffered a stroke in 1930. Godowsky died on November 1938.
