María Josefina Bayo Jiménez, known professionally as María Bayo, was born on May 28, 1961, in Tudela, Spain. She began her musical journey at the Pablo Sarasate Conservatory, initially intending to study guitar but later switching to voice under Edurne Aguerri. In 1985, Bayo moved to Germany to study at the University of Music in Detmold under Arthur Janzen. Her breakthrough came in 1988 when she won the first prize at the Belvedere Competition of the Vienna Chamber Opera, earning international recognition. Bayo's operatic repertoire spans from baroque to verismo, with notable roles including L'Ensolleilad in Chérubin, Leila in Los pescadores de perlas, and Lucia in Lucia de Lammermoor. She has also performed extensively in zarzuela. Bayo's awards include the Premio Príncipe de Viana de la Cultura (Prince of Viana Prize for Culture) in 2002 and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (2020).
