Jan Frans Joseph Van der Roost, also known as Jan Van der Roost, was born on March 1, 1956, in Duffel, Belgium, and is a Belgian composer. He studied trombone, music history, and music education at the Lemmens-Institut in Leuven, earning a diploma in composition from the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. His early career saw him composing for various ensembles, including brass bands, wind orchestras, and choirs. His breakthrough came with compositions such as "Rhapsodie" (1982) and "Ceremonial-March" (1984). Throughout his career, he released notable albums like The Wind Music of Jan Van der Roost, Volume 4 (1998), and Spartacus / Poème Montagnard / Sinfonietta, 'Suito Sketches' (2016). He has taught as a professor at the Lemmens-Institut and held guest professorships at institutions in Japan. In 2010, he received the Buma International Brass Award from the Dutch foundation Buma Cultuur.
