Ronnie Burrage, born James Ronaldo Burrage on October 19, 1959 in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American jazz drummer known for blending jazz, funk, and soul. He started his musical career at age seven as a member of the St. Louis Cathedral boys' choir and performed with Duke Ellington at nine. Burrage's early groups included The Soul Flamingos and Fontella Bass. At 17, he moved to New York City, collaborating with musicians like Lester Bowie and Teruo Nakamura. In the late 1970s, Burrage attended North Texas State University on a full music scholarship. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he worked with artists including Woody Shaw, Billy Bang, and Courtney Pine, and founded the avant-garde jazz group Third Kind of Blue. Burrage's discography includes albums like Third Kind of Blue (1986) and In It (2004). He has also been an educator, teaching at institutions such as Jazzmobile and Pennsylvania State University.
