The Wombles, a British novelty pop group, originated from characters in Elisabeth Beresford's children's book series and the subsequent TV show The Wombles. Formed in 1973 by songwriter and record producer Mike Batt, their breakthrough came with the release of "The Wombling Song", which became a hit single. The group released their debut album, Wombling Songs, the same year, followed by several other albums including Remember You're A Womble (1974) (featuring "Banana Rock"), Keep On Wombling (1974) (featuring "Wombling Merry Christmas") and Superwombling (1975). The band's live performances often featured Batt as Orinoco, accompanied by experienced musicians dressed in full costume. They appeared on popular TV shows like Top of the Pops and performed at significant events such as the Eurovision Song Contest 1974. The Wombles were known for their unique blend of children's music and novelty pop, which resonated with audiences. All four of their studio albums went gold, and four of their singles reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart. The band was the most successful music act of 1974 in the UK, with singles in the charts for more weeks than any other act. Despite their success, the group disbanded in 1976, but returned in 2011, to perform at the Glastonbury Festival, marking a notable comeback.
