Mumm‑Ra is an English indie rock band formed in Bexhill‑on‑Sea, United Kingdom, on 25 January 2001, with vocalist, keyboardist and occasional guitarist James New at its core. The group emerged from school‑age collaborations, initially experimenting with diverse instrumentation before consolidating around James New, James Arguile, Oli Frost, Niall Buckler and Gareth Jennings. Their first breakthrough came with the single "What Would Steve Do?" in April 2006, followed by the EP Black Hurts Day and the Night Rolls On in July 2006, which attracted attention from NME and led to a contract with Columbia Records. In 2007 the band released their debut album These Things Move In Threes, supported by singles "Out of the Question" and "She's Got You High"; the latter later featured in the 2009 film 500 Days of Summer. After extensive touring-including the Reading and Leeds Festivals, T in the Park and Glastonbury-the group announced a split in April 2008. They re‑formed in 2012, issued the EP Back to the Shore (2014), and again reunited in 2019, releasing the compilation Rarities (2020) and singles "Summer" (2020) and "Washout" (2024). The band’s consistent output and festival presence have solidified their place within the UK alternative rock scene.
