Kukuruza, a Russian band originating from the Soviet Union in 1975, began as a student collective known as Ornament. The group initially played songs from the United States, England, and Scotland before transitioning to their signature blend of bluegrass, country folk, and rock-and-roll. In 1984, members Sergei Senchilo and Vladimir Ambros reformed under the name Kukuruza, adapting western music styles despite Soviet restrictions. Their breakthrough came with tours in the United States from 1991 to 1994. They performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1994, becoming the only Eastern European group to play there. Notable collaborations include performances with Emmylou Harris and Jerry Douglas. The band has released over 15 albums, showcasing their unique fusion of Russian folk and American bluegrass.
