Jimmy Woods, born October 29, 1934, in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American alto and tenor saxophonist known for his work in West Coast Jazz. His career started in 1951 with Homer Carter's band. After serving in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956, Woods worked with bands led by Roy Milton, Horace Tapscott, and Teddy Edwards. He recorded "Lookin' Good" with Joe Gordon's quartet in 1961. His breakthrough came with Awakening (1961/62) and Conflict (1963), both on the Contemporary label. Woods collaborated with Carmell Jones, Andrew Hill, George Tucker, and Elvin Jones. He performed at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and toured in Europe and Japan. He was a founding member of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Jimmy Woods passed away on March 29, 2018, in Anchorage, Alaska.
