Hans Leo Mathiassen, known professionally as Leo Mathisen, was a Danish jazz pianist, singer, arranger, composer, and bandleader. He began his musical career working in a record store, where he developed his piano skills by imitating recordings, and began performing professionally in 1927. From 1928 to 1931, he performed with Adrian Rollini’s orchestra in Germany and Sweden, as well as with the Max Lefkos Band. In 1936, he formed his own band and led various ensembles until 1952, performing widely in Copenhagen, touring Scandinavia, and later appearing in postwar Germany. He also made several cameo film appearances. He retired from music in 1953 due to health problems and died on October 10, 1969 in Copenhagen.
