Ester Lambrechts (performing as La Esterella; May 7, 1919 – April 11, 2011) was a Belgian schlager and light classical singer from Antwerp. Lambrechts began a professional career in 1940 after participating in song contests at the music hall Oud-België. Possessing a deep voice spanning three and a half octaves, Lambrechts was referred to as the “Belgian Zarah Leander”. During World War II, Lambrechts performed in Germany under the nickname “die Kanone”. Following the war, Lambrechts performed in British seaside resorts (1948–1954) and became the first Flemish artist to appear on BBC television. In 1953, Lambrechts signed with Philips Records and released the track “Oh! Lieve Vrouwe toren”. Lambrechts ceased performing in 1962 following the death of husband Charly Schleimovitz. Lambrechts resumed a career in 1982, later releasing the album Liedjes die ik graag zing (1988) and contributing to the Shades (2000) soundtrack. Awards include the Radio 2 Voor een Leven Vol Muziek (2001). Lambrechts died in Antwerp on April 11, 2011.
