Painting a peaceful picture of the world standing still for a moment – this is what young New Zealand artist, Tarn PK, wanted to do. Taking a step back from the chaotic world around to create music that feels personal, meaningful, and real.
Releasing his first EP in 2019, the funk-pop single “Talk to You" gained Spotify playlist success on New Music Friday US, UK and NZ/AU, getting over 180,000 streams to date. 2019 provided plentiful inspiration for new music, but for some reason the creativity wasn’t flowing, and it felt more forced and less exciting. It took some soul searching to rediscover what he loved about music in the first place to find some new inspiration. Feeling swamped in synthesisers all it took was picking up an acoustic guitar to inspire what would become his new collection of songs.
The key was pushing himself to discover new music, with gold being found in the likes of 70’s songwriters; Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and John Martyn. The aim became to make something which called back to these ideas but made in a way that felt modern, mixing natural elements such as acoustic guitars, with modern production effects and techniques. Lyrically the ideas are focused on the experience of moving away from home, meeting his girlfriend and starting university.
The subsequent alternative indie folk/ pop Collection – “Monarch” was launched on October 23rd, 2020 with "Part one" '- Serenity' – a ballad about the weight of the world coming off your shoulders.
On 11 December Tarn released “Part two” of the Collection - 'Sky is Falling' - it evokes rolling hills and driving with the rain coming down the window, It’s a song to heal, to support and to hopefullly offer uplift in some way to each listener.
On 26 February Tarn released 'Indigo Dreaming', “Part three” of the “Monarch” Collection - it's a mixture of indie folk and pop elements. It is lyrically about living in a time of anxiety and stress, trying to be okay with that and how being with someone you love can help alleviate those feelings.
All songs are written, performed (except for horns) and produced by Tarn.
