Malachi Cush, born 23 September 1980 in Donaghmore, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, is a folk singer who began performing traditional Irish music in his childhood within a musically inclined family. After working as a gas fitter, he auditioned for the first series of Fame Academy in 2002, where he finished fifth and recorded tracks that appeared on the compilation Fame Academy Finalists. In March 2003 he released his debut album Malachi on the UMTV label, which entered the UK charts at number 17 and earned a silver disc for sales exceeding 100,000; the single "Just Say You Love Me" reached Number one in Thailand. In 2005 he signed with Emerald Music and issued Celtic Heartbeat (Where the Heart Is), a collection of traditional songs. His second studio effort, Timeless Traditions, arrived in February 2009 under the same label, featuring tracks such as "Young Matt Hyland" and "Ned Of The Hill". Throughout his career, Malachi Cush supported tours with other Fame Academy finalists, performed at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, and participated in charitable events including BBC Children in Need and the autism charity Impact Trust. He received the Best Irish Newcomer award at the Irish World Awards in London in February 2005 and continued to perform live in Northern Ireland while maintaining a modest following.
