Starky, an Australian power pop group formed in 1998, emerged from the remnants of Sydney pop band Pennidredful, with Beau Cassidy on vocals and guitar, Nick Neal on bass, and Jonny Wilson on guitar. Their debut single, "Rock 'n' Roll Is the Devil's Music", was released in 1999 by Phantom Records, earning the group a Best New Talent award from Channel V and a $50,000 grant for a music video. In October 2003, they issued their first studio album, Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre, on Laughing Outlaw Records, produced by Rob Younger, and it was chosen as the Feature Album on Triple J. After a brief lineup change, Starky signed with Universal Records and released their self‑titled album Starky on 12 August 2006; the lead single, "Hey Bang Bang", debuted at number 42 on the ARIA Singles Chart, received significant airplay on Triple J, and was nominated for the ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist – Single that year. The band toured the United States, Japan, and France in 2002 and performed at the third Come Together Festival in Sydney in June 2006. On 28 July 2007, following their final show at the East Brunswick Hotel, Starky disbanded, marking the end of their presence in Australian rock music.
