The Modern, an English electronic music group formed in 2001, originated from London and featured vocalist Emma Cooke, guitarist Nathan Cooper, and synthesizer player Chi Tudor‑Hart. After initial rehearsals and local club performances, the band released their debut EP Eastern Bloc on 11 April 2005, followed by the single "Industry" the same day, which entered the UK Singles Chart at number 4. In 2005 the group signed with Mercury Records and produced the single "Jane Falls Down" (19 September 2005), which also charted. Their first full‑length effort, Modern Industry, was issued digitally in January 2008 under Planet Clique, including a cover of David Bowie’s "Modern Love". The same year, the band released The Modern LP through Ninth Wave Records in the United States, a version later expanded into a double album for Asia and the United Kingdom in July 2009. Throughout their career The Modern supported major festivals such as Reading and Leeds (2005) and participated in the 2006 Elektrofest. After a brief period as Matinee Club, the group reverted to The Modern in November 2008, rejoining former drummer Rees. The band dissolved in 2009, and no posthumous releases or awards are documented.
