Iain Ballamy, born on February 20, 1964, in Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom, is a British saxophonist and composer. He began playing piano at age six and discovered the saxophone in 1978. His first professional gig was in 1980, and by age 20, he performed at Ronnie Scott's as Iain Ballamy Quartet. In 1984, Iain Ballamy co-founded Loose Tubes. His debut solo album, Balloon Man, released in 1988, received critical acclaim. Throughout his career, Iain Ballamy has collaborated with numerous musicians, including Gil Evans and Carla Bley. He founded Feral Records in 1999 with Dave McKean. Notable works include the soundtrack for the movie MirrorMask (2005) and collaborations such as Quiet Nights with Django Bates. Among his solo or leader albums are All Men Amen (1995) and Acme (1995).
