Ralf Georg Nils Gothóni is a Finnish pianist, conductor, and composer born on May 2, 1946, in Rauma. He began studying piano at age five and debuted with an orchestra at fifteen. During the Schubertiade 1977 in Helsinki, Gothóni performed as an accompanist for approximately 450 lieder by Franz Schubert. He served as the artistic director of the Savonlinna Opera Festival from 1984 to 1987 and principal conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra between 2000 and 2009. Gothóni held professorships at the Sibelius Academy and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. His discography included recordings of Schubert: Winterreise, Op. 89, D. 911 and Sallinen: Chamber Music. He composed three chamber operas, including Le Chien, and authored the book Luova hetki. Gothóni received the Order of the Lion of Finland in 1990 and the Gilmore Artist Award in 1994.
