Selwyn Pretorius, known mononymously as Selwyn, was born in 1982 in Durban, South Africa. He is a singer of Contemporary R&B and Soul music, based in Perth, Western Australia. Selwyn's initial foray into the music industry came through his participation in the Australian reality series Popstars 2, though he did not make it to the final group lineup. His breakthrough moment occurred when producer Audius Mtawarira discovered him while working as a trolley boy at a shopping center, leading to an offer to produce his music. Selwyn's debut album Meant To Be, released in 2002, achieved gold certification by ARIA and in August 2004, Selwyn released "Boomin'", a track from his second studio album One Way. The song, written by Paul Rein and produced with contributions from Australian singer Israel, entered the Australian Singles Chart at number 28 and spent six weeks within the chart. Promoted through the clothing store Jay Jays, where customers received a physical copy of the single after spending $40, "Boomin'" was the third-most added track to Australian radio playlists for the week of August 19, 2004.
