Yukiko Okada, born Satō Kayo on August 22, 1967, in Ichinomiya, Aichi, Japan, is a Japanese singer and actress. After years of auditioning as a teenager, she finally made her breakthrough on the TV talent program Star Tanjō! on Nippon Television, which she won in March 1983. Her debut came in 1984 with the release of her first single, “First Date,” earning her the Rookie of the Year title. This initial success, landing at number 20 on the Oricon charts, was followed by the hit “Little Princess”, reaching number 14. The pinnacle of her early career arrived with her third single, “-Dreaming Girl- Koi, Hajimemashite”, which secured her the 26th Japan Record Awards Grand Prix Best New Artist Award. Her debut album, Cinderella, released the same year, also achieved considerable success, hitting number 7 on the charts. Her popularity soared with subsequent top 5 hits like “Futari Dake no Ceremony,” “Summer Beach” and “Love Fair”. Her sophomore effort, Fairy (1985), immediately reached number 2, with third album Jyūgatsu no Ningyo, released the same year, also making waves, peaking at number 4. Her 1986 single, “Kuchibiru Network”, written by Seiko Matsuda and composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, claimed the top spot on the Oricon weekly singles chart in February, 1986, leading to her fourth album, Venus Tanjō, which reached number 5. Tragically, Okada passed away by suicide in April 1986. Her ninth single, “花のイマージュ (Hana no Image)”, initially set for release around the time of her death, was postponed and eventually released in March 1999 as part of the Memorial Album box set, which reached number 30 on the charts. In May 2024, Okada's 1985 hit “Summer Beach” made a resurgence, re-entering the charts at number 30, a testament to her enduring legacy.
