Ian Timothy Whitcomb, born on July 10, 1941, in Woking, Surrey, England, was a singer-songwriter and record producer. Early influences included Phil Harris, Johnnie Ray, Guy Mitchell, Elvis Presley, and George Formby. He began writing songs at Bryanston School in Dorset and formed bands including Bluesville. In 1965, Ian Whitcomb's single "You Turn Me On (Turn On Song)" peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was recorded with his band Bluesville under the Tower label; he then released the single "N-e-r-v-o-u-s !". In 1966, Ian Whitcomb's version of "Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go with Friday on Saturday Night?" became a hit. After four albums for the Tower label, he retired from performing to focus on writing. He authored several books and produced music projects including the documentary film Bugs Bunny: Superstar. In 1998, Ian Whitcomb won a Grammy Award for package design for Titanic: Music as Heard on the Fateful Voyage. He passed away on April 19, 2020, in Pasadena, California.
