Budowitz, a klezmer band, was formed by musicians from various countries, including Hungary, Germany, and the United Statesm who incorporated 19th-century instruments and themes from the folk music of Bessarabia, Galicia, and Bukovina. The band has also featured various members over the years, including Christian Dawid on clarinet, Tamas Gombai on violin, and Michael Winograd on clarinet. Named after 19th-century accordion maker Karl Budowitz, whose accordion was played by Joshua Horowitz in the group, Budowitz began their career with the release of Mother Tongue in 1997. Subsequent albums include Live (2007) and Budowitz Live #2 (2007). The band's unique blend of traditional klezmer music with modern influences quickly gained recognition, leading to notable awards such as the BBC's Critics Circle award for Best CD and the British Songlines Magazine's Top of the World award.
