An active solo artist since the early 1970s, the J-pop singer and film actor Shigeru Matsuzaki is best known to western audiences for contributing to Katamari Damacy's various soundtracks, singing the opening and closing themes to the Nerima Daikon Brothers anime series, and playing the lead role in the 1982 sci-fi movie Space Adventure Cobra: The Movie. He was born as "Shigeyuki Matsuzaki" on November 19, 1949, in Edogawa City, Japan. His debut single, "8760 Times I Love You," was released in 1970, with the debut record First Album following in 1972. A talented vocalist, he performed the jingle for Glico Almond Chocolate, which became one of the decade's most popular commercials. His singles "Yellow Straw Hat" and "What Did You Tell Me" were also popular during the 1970s, and he released a theme song for the Japanese baseball team Saitama Seibu Lions in 1979. By the 1980s, he was regularly appearing on television as an actor, starring in programs like 1981's I'm A Tough Woman, 1985's I Don't Wear A Ponytail, and 1986's Declaration of the New and Warm Times. He continued releasing new albums throughout the decades, too, with highlights including 1980's Wonderful Moment, 1991's Yes Or No, 2000's Eternal Love, and 2014's Black on Black. In 2023, he released the new single "Kore Wo Ai To Yobunoka?," which debuted at number 75 on the Top 100 Hot Songs JWAVE chart that September.
