Anli Sugano, born Shizuko Umeyama on August 7, 1948, in Toshima, Tokyo, was a Japanese jazz singer. She initially studied oil painting but switched to jazz singing after attending a modern jazz seminar. In 1978, she released her debut album Anli Ichi, followed by Shining Wave (1979), featuring covers of popular jazz standards such as "The Girl from Ipanema" and "We’ll Be Together Again". Throughout the 1980s, Sugano released several albums under labels like Eastworld, Concord, and Philips. Her final album, In Manhattan, was recorded in New York in 1987. Diagnosed with an incurable adenocarcinoma in 1998, she documented her battle with cancer in the book Onna Hitori Gan to Tatakau (A Woman Fights Cancer Alone) in 1999. Sugano passed away on June 30, 2000.
