Founded in Saitama in 1979, Stardust Revue (also known as Sutarebi or SDR) is a Japanese pop group formed by amateur musicians Kaname Nemoto (lead vocals, guitar), Kiyoshi Kakinuma (bass), Masami Terada (drums) and Toshikatsu Hayashi (percussion). Initially known as Gypsy, the group won the Yamaha Popular Song Contest in 1979 with “Ora ga Chinju no Muramatsuri”, renaming the group to Stardust Revue shortly after, to reflect their myriad musical influences. Releasing their first self-titled album on May 25, 1981, their lead single “Shugā wa Otoshigoro” garnered considerable success, launching a career that has spanned over forty years, with the band releasing over twenty-five studio albums including Stars, Best Wishes and the gold-certified Hot Menu, ten compilation albums, five live recordings and fifty-five singles, including “Deera Shiera Mu” (2003); a collaboration with popular Japanese artists Chage and Aska. On August 4, 2001, the band was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, performing 101 songs at a summer folk festival in Tsumagoi, Shizuoka; the most by any artist in a 24-hour period. Continuing to release new music into their fourth decade together, the band released Nenjuu Mosaku in 2020, their first studio album in eleven years, followed by a re-recording of their 1979 winning song “Ora ga Chinju no Muramatsuri” on March 10, 2021.
