Stewart Ransom "Rhett" Miller II, born September 6, 1970 in Austin, Texas, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Miller began playing guitar at 12 and writing songs at 13. He released his debut album Mythologies in 1989 while still in high school. In 1993, at the age of 17, Miller formed the band Old 97's, which became a notable alternative country rock act. Their first album, Hitchhike to Rhome, was released on Big Iron Records that same year. After signing with Elektra Records in 1995, Old 97's gained significant attention with following albums like Too Far to Care (1997) and Satellite Rides (2001). Beyond his band, Miller has released several solo albums. His debut, The Instigator, released in 2002, was followed by The Believer (2006), Rhett Miller (2009), The Dreamer (2012), The Traveler (2015), The Messenger (2018), and The Misfit (2022). His writing has been featured in publications such as Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, and McSweeney’s. Miller also authored two children's books and hosts the podcast Wheels Off, discussing the creative process with various artists. In 2025, Miller released his tenth solo album, A Lifetime of Riding by Night, on October 10 via ATO Records. The album reunites him with Old 97’s bassist Murry Hammond, who produced the record—a collaboration dating back to Miller’s 1989 debut. Recorded primarily at Dave’s Room in Los Angeles, the album features collaborations with artists like Nicole Atkins, Evan Felker, Jesse Valenzuela, Caitlin Rose, and Ben Greenman.
